12 Steps thru Creativity
What follows are the steps that I use to guide me in my creative work.
Drawn by the exotic. Something external implants a creative vision.
Listen for inner voices: “I want” , “I wish for”
, “if only”.
Let the heart beat, the body move. Loosen the constraints, let go, be
free. If you don’t feel it, go through the motions and the mood
Test a variety of perspectives in order to better detect lenses through
which life is viewed. Identify likes and dislikes.
4. USE EMOTION
Draw as you peruse emotion. Feel your body temperature, speed of thoughts,
constriction of your throat, as you tap into the energy.
5. USE NATURE
Invite chance and circumstance into your decision making process. Incorporate
the swaying of trees, the chirping of crickets—whatever grabs
6. USE LOGIC
Tap into your working/practical life and make connections. Include symbols,
vocabulary, knowledge and challenges.
Cut, crumple, tear. It’s okay to be destructive. Learn what feels
how (release, constriction, loudness, segmentation, …).
8. STEP BY STEP
Choose materials and methods one step at a time, with no pre-conceived
plan. Learn to set some pieces aside for incubation. Identify renewed
energy upon return.
Collect shards, seemingly unrelated information. Sift, muse, meditate.
Cater to whim; Watch as the picture develops.
10. GEARS & INTER-RELATEDNESS
Zoom in. Accentuate, thicken. Zoom out. Add darkness, wispy lines, repetition.
Zoom in. Create harmony in neighboring lines.
View from a distance. What feels authentic? What’s unneccessary?
Identify the essential message and mood. White out, fine-tune. Be fearless,
Allow your artwork’s purpose to evolve (motivate, communicate,
decompose,...) Stay tuned to the connection. Then let go.
